Santa Monica, California — Residential Patio Cover Project

Project Overview
On this Santa Monica patio the homeowners wanted a weather‑ready cooking and dining zone that looks built‑in, tames late‑day coastal glare, and stays low‑maintenance next to the home’s light façade.
Our Solution
We designed and installed a freestanding aluminum pergola in a white powder‑coat that ties into the architecture and stonework. An adjustable louvered roof lets in ocean breeze and daylight, then closes for dependable shade and rain protection.

We added drop‑down solar shades on the open sides to soften wind and sun without closing off views to the trees.

Beneath the canopy sits a custom stone outdoor kitchen with stainless components—grill, drawers, under‑counter refrigeration—and proper vent openings. Concealed gutters with post downspouts manage rainfall so the pavers stay dry and the look stays clean.
Highlights
All‑aluminum frame — non‑combustible, won’t rot or need repainting
Adjustable louvered roof — fine control of sun, shade, and airflow
Integrated drainage — hidden gutters/downspouts inside posts
Solar shades — reduce glare and light wind while preserving views
Chef‑ready layout — stone counters with stainless appliances and ventilation details
Hardscape match — large‑format stone pavers unify the pavilion and patio
Future‑ready — pathways planned for LED lighting or heaters
Result
The patio now functions as a four‑season cooking and entertaining pavilion—bright and breezy at lunch, comfortable at dusk, and usable when the marine layer rolls in. The white frame keeps everything light and coastal, while the shades and louvers dial in comfort on demand.
